What to look for during an apartment inspection

Looking for Furnished And Unfurnished Apartments for rent or sale? Before you move into your new apartment, you need to look over your new crib with a fine- tooth comb to ensure that everything is clean, safe, up-to- date and in working condition.

An apartment inspection is necessary to make sure you are getting everything that is promised. It’s like buying a used car. Someone has probably had the apartment in their possession before you and it’s hard to tell if they are passing the property over to you in good condition, unless you insist on an apartment inspection and this should take place ideally before you sign the lease or deed. Doing so, will eliminate any disputes or conflicts you have face with your landlord/ owner in the future. Here are the areas you need to focus on when conducting the apartment inspection.

  • Check the walls for cracks, water leaks, holes and the paint job. These are matters you need to look at throughout the apartment and it’s best to start with these as you move from room to room. If you come across anything out of order, make sure you take pictures for future reference. There should be no drips, paint peels or damages along the wall. It would be aesthetically better if the paint colour is consistent through out the apartment, especially on the ceilings.
  • Make sure each and every plug works. You can test this by plugging something into every outlet to make sure nothing is out of order. The same goes with cables, internet and outlets.
  • Turn on all the lights to ensure that everything works perfectly. Look for cracks, burn marks, and abnormal burn smells that could be red flags. If there are any damages or burnt out bulbs, make sure the owner replaces those for you.
  • Check the blinds, shades or curtains and ensure that none of those are jammed or stuck. They should be in perfect working order before you move in, or else, you will find yourself trying to pry the windows and curtains open. STRESS!
  • Inspect the floor, especially if it’s wooden, for mold, stains, cracks, chips, unusual smells, leaks and other unpleasant issues that you do not want to deal with later. Some apartments have carpets that tend to smell bad. All that has to be looked into before you move in.
  • Its also important to check the plumbing, especially in the bathroom as leaks and other problems can be easily camouflaged.
